This report presents the results of a rapid review of available evidence on the impact of institutional child sexual abuse. The critical synthesis of available evidence provided will contribute to developing understandings of institutional child sexual abuse. While public and professional awareness of institutional child sexual abuse is steadily growing, relatively less is known about the phenomenon compared to intra-familial and other forms of extra-familial child sexual abuse. This report attends to this knowledge gap by drawing on peer-reviewed journal articles, meta-analyses and reports from landmark government inquiries to present a critical synthesis of available evidence describing impacts of institutional child sexual abuse on victims/survivors. The report explores characteristics of institutional abuse, the situations and settings in which it occurs, factors proposed to potentially mediate its causes and consequences, as well as its common and distinct outcomes when compared to child sexual abuse not associated with institutions or organisations.en_US
