This report presents the cost of child maltreatment (or child abuse and neglect) to the Alabama economy in 2013. Child abuse is defined by the Federal Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act as any recent act or failure to act on the part of a parent or caretaker that results in death, serious physical or emotional harm, sexual abuse, or exploitation; or an act or failure to act that presents an imminent risk of serious harm. Four common types of child maltreatment—physical, sexual, emotional, and neglect—are recognized by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).en_US
