Item Webinar: Research on the Use of Human Figure Drawings in Forensic Interviews(National Children's Advocacy Center, 2016) Dickinson, J.The use of human figure drawings in forensic interviewing remains a controversial topic. The NCAC recently issued a position paper which concluded that, based on current research, human figure drawings should not be used as a matter of standard practice. At the same time, many interviewers consider them helpful and they remain a central element of some interviewing protocols and trainings. This webinar will discuss the pros and cons of human figure drawings and will review the latest research that has lead researchers to conclude that their use to elicit initial disclosures of abuse is not an evidence based practice.Item Webinar: Suggestibility: Sources of Error in Children's Testimony(National Children's Advocacy Center, 2016) Dickinson, J.The development of evidence-based interviewing protocols has greatly improved the quality of investigative interviews with children. Still, many sources of error in children's testimony can be traced to factors seemingly beyond interviewers' control—including individual differences in memory and cognition (e.g., executive function), preinterview exposure to suggestibility (e.g., through parents or peers), and deception (e.g., coaching). An understanding of these factors can be helpful when planning interviews, testing alternative explanations for children's statements, and evaluating the reliability of children's testimony. This webinar will review potential sources of error in children's testimony and will address common misconceptions about suggestibility.
