One of the main talking points is the acceptability of corporal punishment of a child by a parent/guardian, whether at home or in public. This chapter describes the legislative process towards banning the defence of corporal punishment in New Zealand, and the vigorous debate that surrounds the subject to this day. It then analyses the law as it stands today, as well as describing subsequent developments since the law change took place.
