Abstract
Estimates suggest that as many as 32% of women and 13% of men will be sexually assaulted during their lifetime. The American Medical Association has described child sexual abuse as a silent, violent epidemic. Despite the strength of these concerns, Prevent Child Abuse America has estimated that for every dollar spent treating sexual violence, a single penny is invested in trying to prevent it. Yet, as George Albee once said, "No mass disorder afflicting mankind is ever brought under control or eliminated by attempts at treating the individual." Clearly, to truly eradicate sexual violence we need to make prevention a priority. This means not only investing more funding, but educating professionals about promising prevention approaches and best practice.
This question and answer forum focuses on three critical sexual violence prevention areas:
1. Encouraging "bystanders" to intervene;
2. Keeping the internet safe for children and teens; and
3. Promoting safety in youth serving organizations (e.g., Schools, Medical Settings, Community Centers, Youth Sports).
