Abstract
Pediatricians have a role to play in the identification of trauma and providing an
appropriate response to help children and families heal. Trauma can be acute or
a series of past events that culminate in symptoms in the present. The following
information will provide an introduction to specific things pediatricians can do
to recognize evidence that a traumatic event has occurred and how to respond.
This document assumes the pediatrician is aware of state laws regulating the
report of child abuse and neglect and the first priority if exposure to trauma is
identified is ensuring the child is currently safe.
