This paper summarizes statistics on the prevalence and contexts of child abuse, briefly explains definitions of abuse, identifies common signs and symptoms, discusses the short and long term effects of abuse, notes the legal and ethical reporting responsibilities of counselors, details some prevention and treatment strategies, and concludes with implications for training of counselors.
